Opuntias grow with water, right temperatures, right soil and sufficent attention.
They show a remarkable abilty to come back from cold, scorching heat or neglect. But if you treat them well, they will surprise you with growth, flowers and some more growth.

Maihueniopsis darwinii MK 1173

This form has big, apricot coloured, and is very frosthardy when dry.

Maihueniopsis darwinii var. hickenii MK 584

This form has big, oange flower and is spinier than the darwinii MK 1173. I have a soft spot for this plant, because it originally came Jan Essers, an old friend of mine. The collection number was JES 89-15.

I grow these plants in trays, so they grow into a nice clump. Eventually they will outgrow their tray.
Small joints with barbed spines. Joints will hang on our fingers.
